Though still quite small, he always found a way to get out of his box and scurry to Patty's feet wherever she might be.
Persistence paid off and he ended up being a
"keeper."

It always seemed as if those warm brown eyes could look straight into your soul.
He could be the clown. He could be the comforter. He could be a showman.
But he was always the "heart" of SHANNON and remains the love of Patty's life.

I was only meant to stay awhile,
And touch your loving heart.
I leave behind my dearest friend,
But sadly, we must part.
I will be with you all your days,
I'll watch my puppies grow.
There is reason for me being here,
But only God can know.
Our times were special happy ones,
You were always there for me.

I will lend to you for a while
a pup, God said
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise that he will stay
since all from earth return
But there are lesson taught below
I want this pup to learn.
I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you
Now will you give him all your love
and know it's not in vain
Nor hate me when I come to take
my pup back home again.
I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done."
For all the joys this pup will bring
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know
forever grateful stay.
But should I call him back
much sooner that you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand
The memories of the boy you loved
The things you both went through.
You'll cherish every minute
You are Special - God sent him to You!
