A Bit of Shomberg History
Greta
A Word About The Shomberg Name
In June of 2006, the American Kennel Club formally approved "Shomberg" as a privately registered name in the German Shorthaired Pointer breed. This means that Steve and Sharon alone have the authority to use this surname in designating a puppy as either their own or having come from their breeding program.

After 38 years, we felt it was certainly appropriate to be an AKC registered name. It is a source of pride and represents all the years of loving, dedicated, and responsible breeding in the development of our own bloodlines. You can also read a little more about us.

We began our journey in 1973 with our first German Shorthaired Pointer purchased as a personal gun dog, and it has been an ongoing love affair with the breed to this day. She was a little GSP bitch that weighed about 45 lbs. and her name was "Greta." "Stephen's Gabby Greta" was not only a phenomenal bird dog but was fantastic with the children and a dear, sweet little shorthair that we dearly love and miss. She was the dam of our first homebred champion, having been bred to Bob McKowen's, "Ch. Adam's Diplomat," a son of "Ch. Adam von Fuehrerheim" (top producing sire in the history of the breed in the U.S.).

We have been actively involved in so many different aspects and venues within the breed and it has given us a perspective that we could never fully describe in a paragraph or a sentence. It is such a versatile breed overall and whatever your interests might be they can certainly enjoy them with you. They are wonderful family companions as well as outstanding athletes in the field and in the water. They are undeniably strong competitors in obedience, agility, and AKC hunt tests as well. We encourage owners to pursue unlimited activities, as the GSP is truly an all around partner to have by their side.

Many people have asked us where we got our kennel name. The answer is quite simple - we chose the name Shomberg because it's German, a word that is easily remembered and easily said. Schomberg is a town north-west of Munich, Germany, and it was our wish to recognize the country that developed this wonderful breed.

National Awards:
In 1983 we were extremely proud to be awarded the honor of having bred the GSPCA Obedience Dam of the Year, which was American/Canadian Champion Shomberg's Shadow of the Ram A/C CD, aka "Chaz," owned then by Kitty Shore and Jim Birdsall.

In 1994, again a distinct honor presented to us was as owners of the 1994 GSPCA Show Dam of the Year, Ch. Oaklore's Katja von Shomberg, aka "Katy." Katy is now listed as a Top Producer for the breed, having numerous champion offspring credited to her production record. In 1986, Katy herself was Winners Bitch and Best of Winners at the GSPCA National Specialty Show in Bethlehem, PA, over an entry of 423 dogs and bitches. Leesy (far right) and Sharon holding April being awarded Best of Winners from the Bred by Exhibitors class, at the 1994 GSPCA National Specialty Show in Denver Colorado

1994 was a thrilling year for us as well, in that Ch. Shomberg's Snowy River, aka "April," was Winners Bitch and Best of Winners from the Bred By Exhibitor Class at the GSPCA National Specialty Show in Denver, Colorado, under respected breeder/judge Mr. Frank Washabaugh (Far Star Kennels). "April" was bred here at Shomberg. She was shown to these prestigious National wins and then to her Championship by Sharon, her co-owner. She is loved and owned by Leesy McDonnell of Frederick, Maryland who goes under the "Snowy River" banner.

Steve and Marco being awarded Winners Dog at the 1997 GSP National Specialty Show in San Diego 1997 provided us with the honor of winning the coveted Winners Dog title under respected judge Patricia Mowbray, at the GSPCA National Specialty Show in San Diego, California, with our homebred solid liver male, Ch. Shomberg's Browning Citori, ("Marco"). Marco was later shown limitedly at specialty shows by Steve and by his sire's owner and professional handler, Pat Crowley of Shannon Kennels in Connecticut. Marco was for a time the primary stud dog here at Shomberg and he gave us many lovely puppies, many of whom are now AKC Conformation champions, AKC titled Junior and Senior Hunters, AKC Field pointed, as well as, AKC Obedience, and Agility titled dogs and bitches.

Marco won an award of Merit at the GSPCA National Specialty Show in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1999 under breeder/judge Betsy Yates, and again received 1st Award of Merit at the 2001 GSPCA National Specialty Show in Jacksonville, Florida, under judge Dr. Asa Mays. Marco continued to enhance our breeding program here, as well as those of other breeders who used him for their lovely bitches. At the 2001 GSPCA National Specialty Show and the GSP Club of North Florida Specialty held in Jacksonville, Florida, 11 of his sons and daughters came home with awards. We feel that is a lovely acknowledgement of a truly outstanding dog and his production record which has undoubtedly left a positive impact on the GSP breed forever. He is now considered to be an All-Time Top Producer in the breed. His last two litters whelped in 2003 will most assuredly continue to reflect his ability to produce beautiful, correct and multi-talented sons and daughters that will be at the forefront of the breeds' competitive venues. And yet - the most prized attribute in all of his progeny has been and will continue to be their beautiful temperaments and personalities that balance their unmistakable Shomberg heritage.
